After owning several reels for a wide pool (18'), I've always found the smaller diameter reels eventually sag, making reeling difficult. This reel is enormous-- 5" in diameter. The thicker reel is a bit less attractive, but I'd rather have a reel that's easy for the family to use. The second thing is the stability of the base-- the "T" shape of the base really helps because it keeps the base upright and perpendicular to the reel without putting all of the stress on the reel bearings to do that.
