My Dolphin Diagnostic robot died after 7 years, so I decided to purchase the Hayward SharkVac XL to replace it. The Dolphin Diagnostic cleaned really well, but the bag that it uses is a total pain to clean, so I wanted something simpler.I got the SharkVac because the cartridges were supposed to be really easy to clean. I'd say they are easier to clean than the Dolphin, but they are not easy on their own. They should have been great but there's a major design flaw. The issue is that the 2 filters are impossible to get out of their holster, if your pool was really dirty. Dirt gets jammed in the plastic in between the filter and it's holder. You can tug with all your might, but it won't come out. On numerous occasions, it's taken me 20+ minutes to clean it, and it's mainly because I'm wrestling to get the cartridge out.
It has one other *major* flaw. It gets stuck under my stairs. I have the ladder type stairs in my in-ground pool, with the metal poles on each side. The Hayward will try to climb up the wall underneath the stairs in the shallow end. It'll hit the stairs, but instead of giving up, it'll keep trying and trying and eventually just turn itself off. It'll happen nearly every time I use it, so now I have to remove my stairs just to use it. I never had this issue once with my Dolphin Diagnostic. One time it tried so hard that it actually jammed itself in between the floor and the stairs. I couldn't un-jam it. I had to actually remove the stairs just to get it out.
Now for the pros. My Dolphin would almost always just skip the shallow end of the pool. It was a constant pain for me. The Hayward doesn't do that though. It covers the whole pool. Also, while the cartridges have the design flaw I described, it is still easier to clean than the Dolphin was. Finally, it does do a pretty good job cleaning.
So, I can't say I love it, or that I'm happy with my purchase. But I can't say that I hate it either. It has 2 big design flaws that are major issues, but at the same time it's good everywhere else and superior to my old Dolphin in many ways. 3 stars is what it gets.
